Remember Stephen Hawking and his famous speech synthesizer? It seems that science has made another giant step forward in helping people with severe neurological diseases.
Scientists from the University of California, Davis have developed a new brain-computer interface (BCI), which is designed for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This implant is capable of converting brain signals into speech with an accuracy of up to 97%!
Imagine: a person who could not utter a word due to the disease can now communicate with virtually no restrictions. Literally a few minutes after activating the system, the patient was able to pronounce any phrases that the researchers asked for. See how it works in the videos.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a cruel disease that gradually deprives a person of the ability to move and communicate. There is no cure for ALS yet.
The implant is currently undergoing testing.
