HDMI 2.2: A New Standard with Bandwidth up to 96 Gbps

During CES 2025, the HDMI Forum unveiled the HDMI 2.2 standard, promising a revolution in multimedia data transmission. The highlight of HDMI 2.2 is its increased bandwidth of up to 96 Gbps, made possible by the specially designed Ultra96 cable.

HDMI 2.2 Capabilities

The new standard enables the transmission of images in the following formats:

• 4K at refresh rates up to 480 Hz
• 8K at refresh rates up to 240 Hz
• 10K at refresh rates up to 120 Hz

For comparison, the previous HDMI 2.1 version supported a maximum of 4K at 240 Hz and had a bandwidth of 48 Gbps.

Improved Synchronization

HDMI 2.2 also includes a new Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), ensuring more accurate audio and video synchronization. This feature is particularly beneficial for systems with multiple devices, such as AV receivers or soundbars.

New Cable Labeling

To prevent counterfeiting, the HDMI Forum introduced a unique labeling design for Ultra96 cables. This will help consumers distinguish certified products from imitations.
