"We created Status in WhatsApp so you can share your life with friends and family <...> We are happy to announce that you can now [add music] by selecting a track when creating a Status"

— WhatsApp blog

To add music to Status, a note icon has appeared on the Status creation screen. Clicking on it opens the WhatsApp music collection. You can select a 15-second song excerpt for photos, and a 60-second excerpt for videos.

There are reportedly millions of songs in the WhatsApp song collection.

The feature will be rolled out gradually — it will be available to all users worldwide "in the coming weeks."
